Wulai (Ulay) Hot Spring & Waterfall (乌来温泉和瀑布)

March 18th, 2009 | by jys |

It was already 12pm+ when we finished visiting the National Chiang Kai-Shek (CKS) Memorial Hall (國立中正紀念堂). So what’s next? We’re heading to Wulai / Ulay (乌来). I heard a lot of forumers discussed about Ulay Hot Spring but I don’t plan to take hot spring there. What else to see besides hot spring? I have no idea.. Since everybody also going, we also must go lar, there must be something that attracts ppl to go, right?

So from CKS Memorial Hall Station, we took the MRT to Xin Dian Station (新店). After we reached Xin Dian Station, we asked around to see how to get to Ulay(乌来). They told us we can take the bus to Ulay and the bus stop is just beside the MRT station. Cool.. we only waited for about 5 minutes and the bus had arrived.

If I’m not mistaken, we paid nt 25 per person (approx. RM 3) from Xin Dian to Ulay. The bus was quite full and we got no place to sit. I was standing at the same side with the bus driver and there’s not much to see but FL’s side (the other side opposite the bus driver) got lot’s to see. As we go up the hill, we passed by houses, mountains, tree, and the color of the river is green in color. Nice!!

About 15 to 20 minutes later (after turning and turning), we arrived at the famous Ulay!! It’s the last stop so you don’t need to worry that you will be at the wrong place.

p1010359

we followed the sign board to get to the Ulay Old Street.

p1010363

it took us 5 minutes to walk from the bus stop to here, Ulay Old street.

p1010364

there are already quite a lot of ppl there..

p1010365

lot’s of things to eat wor..

90% of these stalls sells food and drinks. We were not really hungry although it’s already 1pm+ but when I saw the grilled mua ji (拷麻薯), I decided to try. hehe.. I nv see or tried anything like this before! It’s yummy!! After the mua ji, we tried the pork hot dog (山猪香肠). It smells so nice and we can’t stop ourselves from going near the stall!

At the end of the Ulay old street, we followed the sign to see the hot spring and water fall.

p1010360
Let’s go check out the hot spring and waterfall!

p1010361

see, it’s greenish…

We followed the sign and walked walked walked, then we heard the sound of water. I think that must be the public hot spring!! Let’s go check it out!!

p1010378

wow…nice!! the water is hot??

p1010379

we go further in and we saw lot’s of ppl there. Yes, this is the public hot spring.
It’s free!! But you need/must wear swim suits lar…

p1010383

Most of them brought food, it’s like picnic!! and some even had bbq there! geng!! not bad hor, can have bbq and at the same time enjoy the hot spring. it’s like heaven!! See the auntie (blue) on your right? She’s changing into her swimming suit there!! Super geng!!!! wuahahahahaha…

p1010382

I noticed there’s an umbrella far away from this crowd, I zoomed in and saw this guy.. damn enjoy leh him.. personal pool, far away from the crowd. hehe…

p1010384

there’s this.. just beside the public hot spring.. spoiled the nice view lar..

p1010385

After checking out the public hot spring, we followed the sign to see the water fall. On our way up to see the water fall, we saw a lot of shops provides private hot spring. We plan to have hot spring else where, so we did not try. We walked and walked and walked and 10 minutes later, we were on an empty street. Strange, are we on the right way? There must be some other tourists/locals around mar…

Then we saw a local came out from her house, we asked for the directions. She told us we were on the right way, just go straight and continue to walk about 20 minutes, then we shall see the water fall. Wah seh..20 minutes ar.. go up the hill some more leh..no choice lar, there’s no other way to go up except to walk. Treat is as exercise lor.. luckily the weather is nice (about 15 degrees)!!

p1010386

About 5 or 10 minutes later, we reached here…

p1010387

and still got a long way to go….

p1010388

picture taken while we were on our way up to see the water fall…

p1010391

finally.. we saw the water fall!! wait.. is this the water fall? looks small…

p1010393

got cable car some more wor..

We finally arrived at the top of the hill about 30-35 minutes later!!! The local told us 20 minutes can reach? If we run maybe can reach lar. hehe.. we walked quite fast and only stop at a few place to take photos.. Wow..damn tired…

p1010406

p1010397

Only two rows of shop lots up here, nothing much to see..

p1010399
p1010398

here u go, 30 minutes walk just to see this water fall.. hehe…

p1010404

different angle..

p1010405

seems like very little water only ..

p1010407

walaoeh..we shall skipped this…no energy d..

p1010409

there’s a hotel up here.. don’t know got ppl stay or not..

p1010410

nice view!

p1010411

and more..

p1010413

feels really relaxed and comfortable up here…

It took us 30 minutes to go up, and we spent about 30 minutes up there, and took us about 15-20 minutes to walk down. When we were back on the Ulay Old street, we tried the Hot Spring Egg with ShaoXing Wine(温泉绍兴酒蛋) and the Sweet Potato ‘Di Gua’(蜜汁地瓜). We decided to had our lunch later since we already had so many snacks. hehe..

The sky is dark and looked like it’s going to rain. We rushed to the bus stop to catch the bus back to Xin Dian.

p1010422

Bus fare

p1010423

We were given these when we took the bus up to Ulay and down to Xin Dian after we paid the bus fare. I think this is to prevent ppl give less bus fare. This needs to be returned to the bus driver when you reached your destination.

How do I feel about Ulay(乌来)? Hmm, I still think this place is worth to visit. The view is really nice and the snacks are really yummy! hehe…as for the 30 minutes walk, let’s just treat it as exercise lor..good for health mar.. nice weather, fresh air, nice view, nice food, how can you missed any of these?

Hi,Just wondering if you had any chance to stop by or check out Wulai Aboriginal museum (Atayal Museum) when you were in Wulai?

    Jys:
no wor, where is it? at the waterfall there?

  6. By Karl on May 9, 2009 | Reply

Hi,Apparently, Atayal Museum was located at the entrance of Wulai Shopping area (4 storey musuem).  If you look at your first photo above – you can see the sign for that museum. Also, there is an “Aboriginal Culture Center” opposed to Wulai Waterfall.  It is a remodeled museum of aboriginal folk art. It introduces the aboriginal
culture, customs and habits of Tai Ya Tribe and demonstrates the
historical artifacts. The highlight of the visit to the center is the
singing and dancing show of aboriginal people.I’m just curious about it, if it is worth a visit to that museum or culture centre, or just spend the rest of afternoon enjoying hot spring! lol

    Jys:
I think I must have walked past that. hehe….

Oh, did you try out or see/hear “push-car” ride or “mini-train” between Wulai and the waterfull? (I heard it costs NT$50)?

    Jys:
no wor.. I did see railway tracks there..but i thought it’s no longer in used. So i walked up to the waterfall!! It took me more than 30 minutes!

Haha, Jys! At least, you walked both ways and it was good exercise to burn all those calories from those tasty Taiwanese snacks! :D

    Jys:
oh ya, i treat it as exercise too. luckily the weather is nice so it’s quite comfortable when we walked up and down…won’t feel super hot..
