Taipei Hwahsi Tourist Night Market (华西街观光夜市)
March 25th, 2009 | by jys |A lot of forumers said if we visit the Lung Shan Temple (龍山寺), we should not miss the Hwahsi Night Market (华西夜市) which located just a few streets away from the temple. So after we visited Lung Shan Temple, we proceed to the Hwahsi night market.
After asking the locals for the direction, 10 minutes later, we were in front of the night market.

Taipei Hwahsi Tourist Night Market (华西街观光夜市)

This is our first night market in Taipei. Totally different from our pasar malam. Got shelter, shops..
Seriously I was a bit disappointed when I saw this. There’s nothing much here, one row of shops, selling bags, food (can eat snake here), got palm reading and etc. Nothing much lar.. I’m not sure is it because we were here too early or what..there’s not much ppl also…
We only spent at most 10 minutes there and we decided to leave and proceed to our next destination, Xi Men Ting (西门町).
If you ask me is Hwahsi night market worth visiting? I would say…NO!!

i went there last year as well! but i found out much later, to my horror, it’s not a real tourists spot. in fact, it’s one of taipei city’s oldest redlight district! i guess they wont admit that in reviews but that was what the locals told me after i was completely horrified by that place. it’s totally sleezy.
Jys:
Seriously? you mean in the night market itself? or that area?

apparently it’s the entire area and the night market was the main hotspot. the reason why it’s so unknown its because over the years their crowd sort of died down, the place chui-ed. so they tried to use another tactic to market the place. but it’s definitely not the place taiwan tries to push for foreigners to visit. in fact, if u ever look up those proper tourists guides/official sites, they never ever publicise HuaXiJie as THE place to go.
i guess the forumers were pretty ill informed. haha.. or maybe they just have a liking for sth else..
Jys:
wow, i really didn’t know that. I did post my itinerary on the forum and when forumers saw i’m planning to go to Lung Shan Temple, they suggest me to go to this night market as well..

Isn’t Hwashi market used to be known as “Snake Alley”? If so, then yeah, lots of big shot taipei gangsters used to control that area nearby Snake Alley (especially prostitutes, hence it was known as Red light back then.).Saw that in Lonely Planet book or Insight city guide on Taipei, I think.
Jys:
Is it? No wonder I see lot’s of snakes shops there lar..
