DIY Garbage Enzyme (垃圾酵素)
April 27th, 2009 | by jys |I went back to my hometown two weeks ago. The minute I reached home, my aunt brought me to the kitchen and showed me a big pail. She told me it’s garbage enzyme. Wow!! I am interested in making garbage enzyme ever since I read about it from the newspaper but somehow, I’m not sure how to make it and what is the outcome of it. That is why I’m so excited when I know my aunt is making it and she’s gonna show me how to make it!!
Here’s the garbage enzyme formula:-
1kg Black/Brown Sugar
3Kg Kitchen waste (Fruits skin/vege/pandan leaves, don’t use meat, else it will be very smelly!!)
10 litre of water
If you have more kitchen waste, say 6kg, then you should use 2kg of black sugar and 20 litre of water. Just calculate accordingly.

any air tight plastic container/bottles will do

Black Sugar

My aunt’s friend got this from a fruits seller in the market. we can’t possibly eat so much fruits lar!! hehe..

let’s see how heavy is this.. it’s 12.5kg!!
We will need 10 litre of water for every 3kg of kitchen waste, therefore, our 12.5kg will need about 40 litre water and 4kg of black sugar.
First, dilute black sugar (4kg) in water (40 litre), then add in all the kitchen waste/fruits skin. If you want it to smell better, add in more lemon/orange peels and pandan leaves. You can add in anything you want, as long as it’s vege and fruits. Preferably no meat cos it will be very smelly.

cut the fruits/skin into small pieces
Close it tight, place at cool, dry and well ventilated area and avoid direct sunlight. Keep it for at least 3 months (the longer the better, it will not expired) and remember to open daily to release gases for the first month.
After 3 months, filter and remove the residue. You can reuse the residue again for a new batch of production by adding fresh garbage or you can buried the residue in the ground as a fertilizer.

These garbage enzyme are ready for use!!
The garbage enzyme should be in brown color, if it turned black, add in the same amount of sugar and start the fermentation process all over again. You may encounter white, brown, and black layer (or even worms) on top of the enzyme during the fermentation process. Do not worry, leave it as it is and the chemical reaction will resolve them naturally.
So how useful is the garbage enzyme? Well well well…When you mop the floor, add a small cap of enzyme into the water and you will see a lot of dirt comes off. You can also used it to wash the toilet bowl and trust me, it will be sparkling clean!! Add some enzyme into your glass cleaner and your mirror will be shiny and clean.
It’s best to use on oily stuff, i used to have a hard time cleaning the kitchen’s hood cover (the one that filter the oil) but the enzyme makes my life easier. I tried soaking the cover into water with detergent and enzyme, gently rub the cover and tah-dah, no more oily cover!
The garbage enzyme is really an excellent cleaning tool. You can also add some into your shampoo or body shampoo or whatever you can think of. Well, I really can’t think of a reason why you should not make the garbage enzyme.
Let us all save the earth through garbage enzyme!!

hi,u hv shown a very clear demo.I heard frm a fren who had visited a Thailand garbage collection center and they only ferment it for 1month+ and already start to use the enzyme. Do u know the difference? Is it the longer u keep it the stronger it get??
Jys:
ferment for 1 month +? that i’m not so sure.. from what i heard and what i read, ppl took at least 3 months wor.. the best is 6 months… i think the difference is, the longer we keep, the fermentation process will be more complete gua..

Jys:

Don’t think I can collect 3 kg of kitchen waste in one day. Can I add in the kitchen waste bit by bit in different days?
Jys:
yes, you can but then you will need to keep for 3 months based on the very last time you added the kitchen waste.
what i suggest is to keep the kitchen waste in the fridge, preferably those dry one like fruit’s skins, or you can go get it from the fruit seller. they will be very happy to give it to you for free.

I suggest to put some serai into the garbage enzyme. most of the inserts are sensitive with the serai smell… especially lipas.
Jys:
yep, can also, as long as no meat stuff. hehe…

Hi
I have 2 containers of garbage enzymes (3 mths + )on my countertop (far from heat, of course)
and I have seen ants going around the countertop and the wall cabinets above but never on the containers.
If I stand nearby, I can smell the enzyme.
Doesn’t the smell repel ants and insects?
Really curious to know how it can be used to repel ants coz they are always hanging out around my honet jar and edible enzyme containers!
What should I do?
Is it effective in repeling lizards?
cheers
Jys:
I’ve heard enzyme is good for ants, but never heard ppl mentioning lizards. However, I tried on ants and it doesn’t really work. :p

Hi, I want to ask where can I get the brown sugar? (in PJ?) I went to Tesco but the price is more expensive than white sugar. so i added white sugar for my first batch instead coz can’t wait to see the result oredi..
can you share where to get cheap brown sugar?
and, do u know if i can put assam jawa in? I hv a lot of expired assam jawa with me…thanks ya
Jys:
brown sugar is more expensive than white sugar cos it’s a better. hehe.. anyway, if you feel brown sugar is more expensive, maybe you can try with black sugar? i think you can get black sugar at those kedai runcit.. not sure whether can use white sugar or not, the formula says black/brown sugar only.. hehe..
assam jawa? yes i think you can add it in. Some ppl even add in meat!! but of cos it’s not advisable to add meat as it will become very smelly and you might get ulat some more during the process..
