Backpacking.. can you do that?
June 4th, 2009 | by jys |Whenever I heard or read about someone going backpacking for several months, I will asked myself, can I do that? Can I take 2 months off, 2 months unpaid leave to go backpacking? Or better still, can I resign from my work and go backpacking for a few months? Or, will my family let me leave everything behind and go backpacking for a few months?
The answer is, NO, NO, and NO. Even If I’m rich enough, can resigned from my work, I think my family will not let me go backpacking for a few months too. They probably will start lecturing me, telling me this is a wrong decision, a wrong thing to do and I’m wasting my time.
I envied people that can leave everything behind and go backpacking and when they returned, they will have a fresh start, looking for a new job and etc. I think I will never have a chance to do that. What about you? Do you think you can leave everything behind and go backpacking, then start all over again when you returned?

I often dream of escaping for 5 or 6 months to hike the Appalachian Trail from George to Maine.
Short answer – not going to happen any time soon. It’s not so much the money as the responsibilities of family – my children. Once they are older it may actually happen.
Most of the people I know of who have done it are either right out of school or retired from public service (early retired about 50 years old) from teaching, fire dept, etc.
I make up for it by doing short trips and reading about it.
No big deal.
