Dear boss, can I take 10 days off every 2 months?

June 10th, 2009 | by jys |

I was exploring new blogs to read and I came across this blog which belongs to a couple which lives in KL. Their recent posts are about their trip to Paris, very interesting. I hope I can afford to go lar.. Anyway, after reading their interesting posts about their Paris trip, I decided to go through their archives to see where else they’ve been to. And guess what, they’ve been to many many places…Paris, Australia, Hong Kong, China, Korea, India, London, Bangkok, Vietnam and the list goes on and on and on…

It seems like every 2 months, they will go for a trip, either a short trip to countries nearby, or to some european countries for like a week or two. The first question that popped into my mind.. don’t they need to work? Ok, let’s not talked about the money they need to spend, probably you’ll say they are from a rich family or so. But from their posts, I know both of them are working, so how come they managed to take leave so frequent without getting fired?

Imagined me taking 10 days leave every 2 months, I think my manager will shout at me, or worst, fire me! Not only my manager, I think my family will shout at me also.. My brother always ngee ngee ngam ngam whenever I tell him I’m going to travel. He thinks I’m wasting my time and MY MONEY (see the MY MONEY in capital letters, I’m spending MY OWN MONEY and yet he still unhappy..).. see..unsupportive family members..

Apart from all the questions, I actually VERY ENVY them, yes, both of them. Both of them have good bosses (i assumed lar..), both of them can take leaves anytime they want, both of them got supportive family and both of them likes to travel. That is just sooo great!!

I just hope I can be like them one day.. travel and travel and travel some more.. without worrying about $$$$!! :p

Or is it because of their nature of job? Job that doesn’t need them to be there physically all the time? Or perhaps they are working with their family. Ha :D

Hello Joyce,If you don’t mind me asking, what is your age range (I know females don’t like to be asked exact age) and your occupation or job title?Actually if you have such desire to do what you like, don’t let anything or anyone hold you back. There are now many young professionals who are self-employed, to be able to do what they love. Obviously though, the culture is not prevalent in Asia. The argument is that you do not want to waste your youth working for a retirement plan. What if at the end of the day, your physical and mental conditions don’t allow you to enjoy as much as you would now, even if you are able to visit the same places and do things you have planned?I’m getting a little cheong hei here, stopping soon. You should check out the book The Four Hour Workweek by Tim Ferriss (not a promotion, so no links, just google if you would like to check it out). I don’t 100% agree with the author about how he do things but I am fully in support of the “I am the master of my life and time, you don’t have the right to take a large part of my life and time away in the name of work, study, etc.” culture.

    Jys:
haha, ya female don’t like to tell ppl their age, so i consider myself as .. erm, still young. wuahahahahhaa

you know what.. I totally agree with you, and i’m currently TRYING to work towards that direction, and hopefully I can be successful. Self employed is not easy, besides need to earn enuf for me, i need to make sure it’s enuf to cover my whole family too, and of cos, all other commitments.

money is one thing, supportive family is another thing.. so.. this is definitely not something easy to achieve.. :)

as for that book, ya, will try to google that out…seems interesting..

going to euro trip can cost alot in time and money. A friend of mine just come back from paris spend around 10K and almost 2 weeks for the paris trip. Some company give their staff 20-30 days leave per year, may be like that they have much more time to go travel

    Jys:
well, 20 to 30 days annual leaves also not enough to take gua… every 2 months take few days leave wor..
