Estimate? How to estimate?

We have this module to let our client create approval levels for each and every department. Sometimes we will received funny emails from them, asking us questions which we totally don’t know how to answer. For example, today, we received an email from them asking us to estimate how much time needed for them to enter all the approval levels for all the departments.

Well, I feel like answering them in this way..

1. Depends on your working attitude, whether you got go snaking or not. If you sit whole day in front of the pc and enter the data, should be pretty fast.
2. Depends on your typing speed.
3. Depends whether you got go toilet very often or not.
4. Depends whether you are multitasking or not, fully concentrate on entering the data? or doing something else at the same time.

I really dono how to estimate how much time needed for them to finish entering the data, this one really depends on the person. Just like you asked me how much time needed for u to finish a bowl of rice. Well, some ppl can finish within 5 minutes, some need 15 minutes, some need 1 hour.. who knows?

~sigh..I hope I misunderstood what they meant…

Dear boss, can I take 10 days off every 2 months?

I was exploring new blogs to read and I came across this blog which belongs to a couple which lives in KL. Their recent posts are about their trip to Paris, very interesting. I hope I can afford to go lar.. Anyway, after reading their interesting posts about their Paris trip, I decided to go through their archives to see where else they’ve been to. And guess what, they’ve been to many many places…Paris, Australia, Hong Kong, China, Korea, India, London, Bangkok, Vietnam and the list goes on and on and on…

It seems like every 2 months, they will go for a trip, either a short trip to countries nearby, or to some european countries for like a week or two. The first question that popped into my mind.. don’t they need to work? Ok, let’s not talked about the money they need to spend, probably you’ll say they are from a rich family or so. But from their posts, I know both of them are working, so how come they managed to take leave so frequent without getting fired?

Imagined me taking 10 days leave every 2 months, I think my manager will shout at me, or worst, fire me! Not only my manager, I think my family will shout at me also.. My brother always ngee ngee ngam ngam whenever I tell him I’m going to travel. He thinks I’m wasting my time and MY MONEY (see the MY MONEY in capital letters, I’m spending MY OWN MONEY and yet he still unhappy..).. see..unsupportive family members..

Apart from all the questions, I actually VERY ENVY them, yes, both of them. Both of them have good bosses (i assumed lar..), both of them can take leaves anytime they want, both of them got supportive family and both of them likes to travel. That is just sooo great!!

I just hope I can be like them one day.. travel and travel and travel some more.. without worrying about $$$$!! :p

Time flies, one week gone just like that. Yes, no blogs updated last week because I’m on leave, on leave from my work and my blogs. hehe…

I was on a trip, to hanoi, Vietnam for 5D4N. How’s my trip? Hmmm, it was ok.. ya, just ok.. will tell you more about it, of cos, after I finished writing about my Taiwan trip. :p

It was supposed to be a relax week but it appeared to be the other way round. I was supposed to be energetic when I start work again but it doesn’t seems to be that way too. haha…

Anyway, I’m back to work again..and of cos, will start updating my blogs again too.. so stay tune, if you want to know what happened to my hanoi trip!!

I’m not stupid ok, I know these are excuses!!!

When he can’t finish his work, he’ll come up with all kinds of excuses.. I’ve heard all these from him…

1. Parents sick lar, have to take care of them, no time to work.
2. I know how to do one, but then one part I forgot, so spent a lot of time doing research.
3. I finished d one, but I accidentally overwrite my files on the server..(ya right)
4. Yesterday one of the tools got problem, I spent whole day trying to fix it..(When i asked him wat’s wrong, he said ok d…)

and the latest one…

5. I finished 90% d, then suddenly don’t know what happened, some of my files gone missing…

He thinks I’m damn stupid or what?

I think there are more to come..stay tune..

Never admit to other ppl that you are not doing well..

I chat with a friend through msn few days ago. He told me he took a part time job as unit trust consultant. Since the economy is so bad, I asked him how is his unit trust business. Actually I already heard from another friend that he’s not doing that well in unit trust. Not much ppl willing to invest now and the price of the unit trust that he bought also dropped quite a lot.

Instead of telling me he’s not doing very well, he told me his unit trust business is very good. A lot of people invest in unit trust cos the price is low now and he advise me that I should invest as well. When I heard this from him, it makes me wonder, is he lying to me so that I can buy from him? If yes, then he’s treating me as a potential customer rather than a friend.

Never admit to other ppl that you are not doing well.. That’s his tactic to attract ppl to buy from him?

Do you have problems eating alone?

It is fun to have a bunch of lunch mates going out for lunch together. of cos I’m referring to lunch mates that can ‘click’, can gossip, can talk about anything without having to worry that they will go spread the news out to other ppl. I used to have a group of lunch mates but slowly, one left, then followed by another, and another, and another… So now, I only have 1 or 2 lunch mates, but I’m still ok. We can still talk, gossip and the things we talked during lunch will be kept within ourselves only.

Recently a colleague request to join us. Since then, everything we talked during lunch will be spread. Due to that, we started to talk less.. and less…And now, I rather eat alone than joined that group…

Eating with a bunch of lunch mate is fun, but eating alone can be fun as well. For eg, you don’t need to eat things that you don’t feel like eating (sometimes other colleague suggest to have this and that but you don’t feel like eating.. hehe..), you can eat whatever you want. If you’re full, you can have light lunch, if you’re hungry, you can eat more…then you got lot’s of time to do other things like shopping, do banking stuff.. (eat alone very fast one mar..)

I’m ok with eating alone, what about you?

Resignation..which type are you?

There are a few types of people in the office. If you observe your colleagues, I bet you will noticed too. Here’s what I noticed:-

Type A, always telling people that he wants to resign, constantly complaint about the company and also asked others to leave the comp. But at the end of the day, after so many years, after so many people come and go, this type A still remained in the company.

Type B, really plan to resign, but before he found a new job and handed his resignation, he tells the whole comp (except his superiors) about his plan to resign. Funny type of people, he never think that the news will spread and his superiors will get to know about this.

Type C, plan to resign but never tell anybody about it. After tender the resignation letter only will start telling other colleagues.

Type D, after tender the resignation letter, started to talk bad things about the company, persuade other colleagues to resign…

Same name, same characteristics?

Sometimes I may wonder, if I happened to know someone with the same name as me, will we have the same characteristics? I know “Joyce” is a common name but so far I only know one “Joyce”. She’s my ex colleague but I do not see anything in common between us, except both of us are from the same state.

However, I do know someone with the same english name and have the same attitude. Well, they both really have a lot in common. For example, they both like to sleep in office. hehe.. and they both dun pay attention to work, and they are very good in finding ways to “snake” in office..Oh ya, forgot to mention, they both from the same college as well!!

Same name same characteristics? hehe… I think… YES !!! (for some ppl lar.. )

Fresh grads nowadays are really different from last time (of cos not ALL freshie la..), at least different from the time when I was a fresh grad. 9am start work, they reached office at 10am, even later than those managers. Even when people tells them try to come earlier, preferable not later than 9:30am, they still come at 10am, totally ignored what ppl said. They treated datelines like nothing, to them, you want to set datelines is your problem, I will take my own sweet time to do my work. Lunch time 1 hour? Who cares? They will take 1 and a half hour, after finished lunch can go shopping some more..

This minute received warning email from manager, asked them not to chat on msn (big boss saw them chatting, cos they MAXIMIZE the screen), next minute, still chat like normal…with 3 or 4 friends at the same time. When they feel sleepy, they will sleep, with earphones on their ears, so that they won’t be awake by other people..

and you know what’s the best part? The companies still keeps them!! Geng leh!!

If you are working in a “normal company (normal means every year company will give bonus and increment, hehe), at this time, I’m sure the conversation during lunch will be “how much bonus can we get?”, “how much increment can we get” .. And if you have a close colleague that works in the accounts department.. you probably will start asking her to give you some hints on whether company is giving more bonus or less bonus compared to last year..

I’m working in a half normal company.. there’s no rules stated that my company will or must give bonus/increment every year. I even heard from some colleagues said that long long time ago there’s a colleague, instead of increment, his salary got decreased (dono true or not lar..)!! I’ve worked in this comp for 3 yrs plus and so far so good, every year, there’s bonus and increment. Although both bonus and increment is not a lot, but i’m happy.. got bonus really makes a lot of difference!! As for this year, I’ve not heard any news yet but actually I think there are 70% that I will received nothing this year (bad economy…)..But i’m still putting a lot of hope in the other 30%, hoping I can get surprises this year…

What about you? Are you working in a “normal” or a “half normal” or an “abnormal” company? hehe.. how many months bonus and how many percent increment are you getting?
